Can you earn credit card rewards paying rent?

Yes, if your landlord accepts cards. Most charge a processing fee, often around 3%, which is more than nearly any card earns. A few rent-focused cards and platforms avoid the fee.

The fee problem

Property managers that accept cards usually pass the processing cost to the tenant, commonly 2.5% to 3%.

A 2% card paying a 3% fee loses 1% of your rent every month.

Third-party rent payment services charge similar fees and send your landlord a check or bank transfer.

The exceptions

At least one co-branded card is built for rent and earns points on rent payments without a card fee, through its own payment system.

Some landlords accept cards with no fee. Ask before you assume.

A rent payment can help you meet a sign-up bonus requirement. The fee may be worth it if the bonus is large and you have no other way to reach the spend.

The quiet risk

Paying rent by card only helps if you pay the balance in full. Card interest is far higher than any reward.

Some issuers treat payments through certain services as cash-like, with cash advance fees. Check the terms first.

Do not let a rent charge push your utilization high just before a loan application.

Common follow-ups

Is paying rent with a credit card worth it?
Usually not when there is a fee of 2.5% or more. It can be worth it with no fee, or to meet a large sign-up bonus.
Does rent count as a cash advance?
Normally it is a purchase. Some payment services can be treated as cash-like by certain issuers, so check first.
What category does rent fall into?
It depends on how the landlord or service processes it, often real estate services or the service's own code.
