Do airport restaurants earn credit card dining rewards?

Most airport restaurants and coffee shops code as restaurants and earn the dining rate. Newsstands, convenience shops and some concession operators code as retail.

Restaurants and coffee shops

Sit-down restaurants, bars and branded coffee chains in airports usually code as eating places.

Many are run by concession companies, but the restaurant location still usually carries a restaurant code.

Self-order kiosks inside a restaurant code the same as the restaurant.

Where it changes

Newsstands and grab-and-go shops usually code as convenience or retail stores, even when they sell sandwiches.

Airline lounge day passes code as the airline or lounge operator, not dining.

Food bought on board a plane codes as the airline, so it may earn the travel rate instead.

Which card to use

At a restaurant, use your best dining card.

At a newsstand, use your best flat-rate card.

Abroad, use a card with no foreign transaction fee before anything else.
