Guide

Does Uber or Lyft count as travel for credit card rewards?

Usually yes on cards with a broad travel or transit category. Rides code as taxi or limousine services. Uber Eats is a separate merchant and usually counts as dining or delivery, not travel.

How rides code

Uber and Lyft rides generally carry the taxi and limousine merchant code. Issuers that include ground transportation in travel or transit pay their bonus on it.

Cards that define travel narrowly, as airlines and hotels, pay the base rate on rides.

Some cards name rideshare as its own category, separate from travel.

Uber Eats is not a ride

Uber Eats orders carry a different merchant description from Uber rides. Many issuers count them as dining, some as general purchases.

Uber One membership fees can code as a subscription.

Scooter and bike rentals through the same apps are inconsistent. They may code as transit or as general services.

Card credits

Several premium cards include monthly Uber credits. Those credits apply only when the card is added to your Uber account.

A credit is not a multiplier. Once it is used, the best card for the rest of the ride is the one with the best transit rate.

Check whether the credit covers rides only, Eats only, or both.
