Supercenter versus supermarket
Rewards follow the merchant category code, not the contents of the cart. A Walmart supercenter carries a superstore or discount store code, the same group as Target.
Cards that pay a bonus on US supermarkets list superstores as an exclusion. At a supercenter they pay their base rate, even on a cart of nothing but food.
Walmart Neighborhood Market stores are smaller, food-focused stores, and they often code as supermarkets. The same brand can earn two different rates a few miles apart.
Online orders and pickup
Walmart.com orders, including grocery pickup and delivery, usually code as Walmart's online business rather than as a supermarket.
Some cards with an online shopping category pay their bonus there. Grocery cards generally do not.
If you split shopping between pickup and a supermarket, the two trips often deserve different cards.
What to use at Walmart
With no category bonus available, the best card is usually your highest everything-else card. A 2% flat-rate card beats a grocery card earning 1x there.
Walmart's own co-branded card pays its best rate on Walmart.com and in the Walmart app, which can beat a flat-rate card for heavy online shoppers.
Rotating 5% cards sometimes feature Walmart for a quarter. In that quarter, up to the cap, the rotating card is the answer.
