Do tips count toward credit card rewards?

Yes. A tip added to your card payment becomes part of the same transaction and earns the same rate. At a restaurant, that is the dining rate.

Same transaction, same rate

When you add a tip on a receipt or terminal, the merchant adjusts the final charge.

The whole amount, including the tip, carries the merchant's code.

The pending charge may show the amount before the tip. The posted charge includes it.

Separate tips

Tips paid in a delivery or rideshare app are part of that app's charge and earn its rate.

Tips sent through a payment app go to a person, not a merchant. They can carry fees and are sometimes treated as cash-like.

Cash tips earn nothing.

Service charges

Automatic service charges and delivery fees are part of the merchant's charge and earn the same rate.

Bonus categories apply to the full amount, including tax.

Caps count the full amount too.

Does tax earn rewards?
Yes. Sales tax is part of the purchase amount and earns rewards.
Does a tip on a delivery app earn dining rewards?
If the app's charge earns dining with your issuer, the tip included in it does too.
Why is my posted charge higher than the pending one?
The pending charge often excludes the tip. The final charge adds it.
